As part of our regional housing Community of Practices (CoPs) focus on local partners’ success, our May gatherings will be led by Homes Not Borders (HNB), whose staff will share the history and growth of HNB success in welcoming and helping newcomers of many backgrounds settle into new homes in the Washington, DC area. Each CoP meeting will start with HNB's presentation of their mission and work, with plenty of time for your questions, discussion, and for sharing other ideas for maximizing the use of specialized partners to set up newcomers’ homes.

Housing Tips for Refugee Newcomers: Fair Housing

Refugees and other newcomers arriving in the United States have the human right to choose a community to live in — without facing discrimination. Unfortunately, some newcomers face difficulties in finding safe, affordable housing due to discriminatory practices. The federal Fair Housing Act was passed by Congress in 1968 to address this issue. This law not only prohibits housing discrimination based on factors like color, race, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and familial status, but it also emphasizes the right to choose. This webinar will provide an overview of the Fair Housing Act, outline the protected classes under it, and discuss ways to identify discriminatory practices during housing transactions.
